The challenge

Technology has it’s up and downs, it’s important for a HMI to be as intuitive and responsive as possible since each second you are not paying attention to the road could lead to a tragedy, building a HMI is one of the hardest UI/UX challenges a designer could face, usability, user-friendliness and a good UI communication is critical.

Solution

The HMI is comprised of two wide screens, a digital cluster and an infotainment system, The cluster is position directly in front of the driver to allow easy access to valuable information such as speed, consumption battery life and so on, the second screen is a touchscreen that allows the driver to control aspects of the vehicle and monitor it carefully. The overall aspect of the design is a minimalistic design that focused on low distraction without any unnecessary information displayed. The design is dynamic and changes based on the user input.

The Process

The process was a lengthy one, we created a user persona a design system, we carefully analysed existing HMI embedded systems for their pros and cons and we spoke to experts in the field of design and implementation of HMI screens. After Outlining a wireframe for the design, we created a high-fi design and implemented any critical feature for the system to work at it’s best, after that we’ve done usability testing using protopie figma prototyping and useberry, we’ve done two tests the 5 second test and usability task testing.

Multiple interaction methods

While touchscreen is the main interaction method, we developed other ways to interact with the system, one being voice assistance, touch pad similarly to the merdes mbux system and wheel controls for the digital cluster, all of these methods help the user to concentrate on the driving rather than fighting with the touchscreen all the time.

Our conclusion

Luminae Motors project successfully addressed the challenge of creating an intuitive and responsive HMI for luxury sports cars. By prioritizing safety, usability, and minimal distraction, we developed a dynamic interface that enhances the driving experience. Through careful research, prototyping, and testing, we ensured that drivers can easily interact with their vehicles while staying focused on the road, staying true to Luminae Motors' commitment to cutting-edge technology and design.
